Full and partial house rewires

Planning a refurbishment, extension or changes to an older home’s electrical installation? ARM Electrix can discuss the scope of a full or partial rewire with homeowners and builders. The right approach depends on the existing circuits, the rooms being altered and the condition of the installation.

Planning the extent of work

A full rewire and a partial rewire involve different access, disruption and testing requirements. Tell us which rooms will change, whether the home will remain occupied and what electrical work has already been carried out. Previous inspection reports, drawings and a room-by-room plan help define the starting point.

Where some existing circuits are retained, they need to be considered alongside the proposed new work. We will not assume that replacing a consumer unit alone resolves an underlying wiring concern.

Rewires during extensions and refurbishments

Kitchen, family-room and whole-house projects often change where sockets, lighting, switches and equipment supplies are needed. Agree positions with the builder and other trades before walls and finishes close. For a new extension, the existing installation and the new circuits should be considered as one coordinated electrical scope.

Access, programme and handover

First-fix routes, second-fix fittings, safe access and power interruptions need to fit the building programme. Explain any rooms that must remain in use and any dates already agreed with other contractors. The quotation should identify what is included, any assumptions about the existing installation and the testing and documentation for the agreed work.

Questions before requesting a quote

Does an older property always need a full rewire?

No conclusion can be made from age alone. Describe the concerns and provide any available report; the installation needs an appropriate assessment before the extent of work is agreed.

Can you discuss only part of the house?

Yes. Tell us which rooms or circuits are affected and what will remain. A partial scope must be considered in the context of the retained installation.
